Canada tightens quarantine rules, keeps borders open

Owing to the increase in the spread of more infectious Covid-19 variants, on January 29, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had announced that in the coming few weeks, international travellers must adhere to additional testing and quarantine rules. They must take a Covid-19 test upon their arrival in Canada.

After taking up the test at the airport, travellers must quarantine for three days in a designated hotel at their own expense. Travellers will be allowed to leave the hotel only after they test negative for Covid-19. After completing the 3-day quarantine period at the hotel, travellers must quarantine themselves for 11 days at their private residence. On the 10th day, they must take another Covid-19 test to ensure further safety.

Currently, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary are the only major cities that are set up with sufficient facilities for the isolation of travellers. Therefore, as of midnight of 3rd February, only these cities will receive international arrivals. In addition to this, travellers must produce negative Covid test results obtained within 72 hours before their arrival in Canada.

Despite all the strict rules, the Canadian border remains open to international students holding a valid study permit. Host institutions and schools must have their Covid-19 readiness plan approved by their provincial or territorial government.
